Dwarves and their toys...I just don't know. ;-)
Or are they just flying dwarven pirates?
Either way, this piece is another amazing piece of work.

Flying Ship
Winner: Open Category Golden Demon UK 1997

The whole project was inspired by a painting by John Blanche, which some of you might remember. As far as I know this painting could be seen in the WFRP Rulebook and the Ratspike book.
When I saw this painting for the first time I knew that I had to build this ship but I was unable to realize this project until ten years later.
The inscriptions on the ship are taken from the lyrics of Richard Wagner´s opera
"The Flying Dutchman".
They say the following:
On the sail:
´He who relies on the wind kneels before the dark one´s mercy.´
Around the ship:
´Woe the seven seas, ask the seafaring folk who travelled them,
they know this ship, the terror of all faithful.´
The ship itself was entirely built of plywood and stripwood in the way which
wooden model ships are usually built. Forreference I used a book by Vincenzo Lusci
which is dealing with the building of historical model ships.
Following are some main points of modelling which might be interesting.
Windows were made by using the outer rims of GW plastic shields glued
on blister foil which was heated to give them the correct shape.
The sails, flags and metal planking were made by using metal foil from
beer cans...
The machines of the ship were made from Space Orcs bits and pieces.
The trees are model kits by Harberl & Partner from Bayreuth, Germany.
This company makes stuff for the more discriminating model railroader.
To complete the diorama it took me about 3 months of hard, hard work,
but I managed to complete it right in time for the Golden Demon.
But I had to solve the transport problem.
How to get the diorama undamaged from Germany to the UK by plane ??
I ended up by building a very heavy wooden box into which I was able to put in the ship
and the base seperated from each other and it worked.
No damages, no problems at the customs...
In the end I have to say, that it was great fun to build the diorama
and a great surprise to win the open category.
But the greatest thing was, to see John Blanche lurking around the victory ceremony
trying to find out who has put his imagination into the 3rd dimension
(Hi John, it has been a great pleasure for me to talk to you and it would be a greater pleasure
for me, to get in contact again...)
